welcome
All youth have the ability to succeed in a workplace if trained in basic work skills.
Often low-income youth and young adults, and especially those emancipating from foster care, have not had the opportunity to learn those skills.
YouthAbility is committed to helping youth create positive, self-supporting and long-term independence within our community. Our multifaceted program offers disadvantaged youth self empowerment through training and education.
YouthAbility is a nonprofit organization that PrOVIDES job learning opportunities for at-risk youth.
how you can help:
On 8/31/10, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics announced that youth unemployment hit 51.1%, the highest rate since the government started collecting this data in 1948. The need is so clear. Please support the youth of Humboldt County by donating to Youth-Ability’s training programs. More...
Angels of Hope Thrift Store
Why shop here?
Although most thrift shops benefit worthy organizations, YouthAbility’s flagship store offers unique benefits to our community. One hundred percent of our profits go to training local at-risk youth for the job market. In keeping with our mission, we work with county programs and professional facilitators to educate otherwise hard-to-employ youth in basic work skills and ethics.
The biggest reason to visit our store in Arcata, however, is because it’s a great place to shop: some of the lowest prices, one of the largest inventories and specially trained staff. We invite you to come on over soon. Click here for more store information.

A new training program for
Humboldt County. . .
An estimate is that 200-300 youth in Humboldt every year are unprepared to shoulder the responsibilities of self-support as they launch into adulthood. Our county has a pressing need for these disadvantaged youth and young adults to learn basic work skills.
Now that our training program at Angels of Hope Thrift Store is in its fourth year of operation and self-supporting, YouthAbility has begun plans for a program extension. We’d like to offer work-based job training for youth in a coffeehouse/snack bar social enterprise. We envision a program that also offers an on-site tutor-staffed education classroom; recycled-handmade products design and fabrication; a woodworking shop and possibly small engine repair.
We rely on continued community support. Besides funds, assistance with building supplies, fixtures, even retrofitting a sprinkler system, we need volunteers for construction and for many other functions.
If you can help, please call our Executive Director, Rose Baker at 707 496-6070 or email us: info@youthAbility.org.
